High chromium white cast iron is the third generation of white cast iron developed after ordinary white cast iron and nickel hard cast iron. High chromium white cast iron contains more than 11% chromium, and the ratio of chromium and carbon content is between 4 and 8. Under this condition, the high hardness M7C3 carbides almost completely replaced the M3C carbides. The toughness of the overall material is remarkable. High-chromium cast iron has been recognized as an excellent wear-resistant material by the world. It is widely used in mining, cement, electric power, road construction machinery, and refractory materials.

The charge generally adopts low silicon pig iron and scrap steel. The alloying elements use ferrochromium (for economic benefits, high carbon or carbon ferrochromium is commonly used), ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotitanium (vanadium and titanium pig iron can reduce costs) and electrolytic copper.
Proper control of pouring temperature will be directly related to the quality of castings. In the case where the casting does not appear cold, a low pouring temperature can be appropriately used to obtain a fine grain structure and reduce the tendency of shrinkage cavities and shrinkage porosity. However, when the pouring temperature is too low, the castings will have defects such as cold insulation and lack of fire.
Although high-chromium cast iron has high hardness and certain impact toughness, it still has the disadvantage of easy brittle cracking, which limits the scope of use.
