Industries such as mining, milling, earthmoving, and construction rely on heavy machinery that often operates under extreme conditions, leading to severe wear and tear. In many cases, wear-resistant cast components—used as machine parts—play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of equipment and minimizing downtime. For instance, these specialized castings supply critical wear parts for a wide range of mining machinery, including crushers, chute linings, mine car wheels, and pumps. Additionally, when heat or corrosion resistance is required, stainless steel-based wear parts offer an ideal solution.
To be classified as corrosion-resistant, stainless steel must contain at least 10.5% chromium, providing extra protection against corrosive environments where corrosion is a concern. The chromium content forms a protective oxide film, significantly enhancing the material's resistance to corrosion. Additionally, higher chromium levels improve oxidation resistance and boost fracture strength, especially at elevated temperatures. When designated as corrosion-resistant, stainless steel castings are engineered for use under conditions where operating temperatures remain below 1,200°F.
Heat-resistant steel castings are manufactured for use in environments where operating temperatures exceed 1,200°F. Compared to corrosion-resistant stainless steels, they have a higher carbon content—up to 0.75%. At extreme temperatures, this elevated carbon level enhances structural strength while reducing ductility.
Carbon content is the key difference between heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant stainless steel castings. To ensure that stainless steel castings perform well in corrosive environments, the carbon content typically needs to be kept below 0.20%.
Compared to carbon steel, machining stainless steel castings is more challenging, requiring slower cutting speeds and feed rates. Experienced manufacturers like Shenyang Gongda can deliver high-quality, custom-made wear-resistant castings—crafted from wear-resistant chromium white cast iron, steel, or stainless steel—to meet the demands of applications that require exceptional resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and heat.
