High-chromium white cast iron boasts exceptional wear resistance. It is particularly effective in machinery or equipment subjected to grinding, arc gouging wear, or crushing processes. This material can significantly reduce downtime and outlast AR plates and CCO coatings in wear-resistant applications—up to 20 times longer than CCO in certain cases. It’s an excellent choice for high-chromium white cast iron components.
The high chromium content in high-chromium white cast iron prevents the formation of graphite within the microstructure. Instead, carbon in the metal is locked up in carbides rather than existing as graphite. These relatively discontinuous, chromium-rich eutectic carbides, combined with martensite, form the microstructural backbone. By carefully controlling the alloy’s chemical composition and optimizing the heat treatment of the casting, it’s possible to tailor both toughness and wear resistance—resulting in a superior end product ideally suited for a wide range of abrasive applications.
